![]() ![]() ![]() Peter Blood, after years of adventuring as a soldier, has now decided to retire and be a physician in the English countryside. ![]() He is confronted with injustice of the most terrible kind: slavery. For Peter Blood, scholar and doctor, the quest for justice is not an idle or abstract discussion. Sabatini based the first part of the story of Blood on Henry Pitman, a surgeon who tended the wounded Monmouth rebels and was sentenced to death by Judge Jeffreys. Although Blood is a fictional character, much of the historical background of the novel is based on facts. Sabatini was a proponent of basing historical fiction as closely as possible on history. Captain Blood was originally published in 1922. In all, he produced thirty-one novels, eight short story collections, six nonfiction books, numerous uncollected short stories, and a play. Sabatini's writing, usually functioning in a historic setting, explores political intrigue, religion, and the place of chivalry and honour, while entertaining with clever dialogue, deftly drawn characters and action sequences as vivid and thrilling as modern movies. ![]() When talking about Rafael Sabatini, most people think of high adventure, sword-fighting and damsels in distress. ![]()

"A wonderful read-aloud for storytimes or one-on-one sharing. Small readers and listeners will empathize with the little duck's plight-and will rejoice at the heartwarming surprise ending. Each creature the ducks meet is seen in its own habitat and behaves in a true-to-life manner, offering a very simple first view of biology and geography. Following the little ducks as they float to all parts of the globe, young explorers can see for themselves the meanings of directional words and learn simple math concepts, such as counting and the use of cardinal and ordinal numbers. But as the sun sets, the 10th little rubber duck is left all alone, bobbing helplessly on the big wide sea. One drifts west, where a friendly dolphin jumps over it. "Ducks overboard!" shouts the captain, as a giant wave washes a box of 10 little rubber ducks off his cargo ship and into the sea. In Eric Carle’s poignant and funny story, illustrated with strikingly designed collages, readers are taken on an exciting voyage of discovery. ![]() Ahoy! It's a still relevant fear at a time when new viruses continue to appear and older ones evolve whist human evolution appears to moving backwards, with more and more people seem willing to reject science and proven fact and take a more troglodyte approach to what barely counts as reason. As the cold war unexpectedly but thankfully thawed, the spectre of nuclear war faded and the supervirus found itself promoted to the position of most likely cause of humanity's destruction. When I was just a lad, the general consensus amongst the politically active was that the world would probably end in a firestorm of nuclear explosions and that it would probably happen soon. ![]() Slarek revisits a favourite sf movie on Arrow's excellent new Blu-ray. ![]() A small town New Mexico is almost completely wiped out by an alien organism and four scientists are recruited to locate the virus and find a way to combat it in Robert Wise's superb film adaptation of Michael Crichton's 1969 novel THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN. ![]() ![]() ![]() If you have a preteen I think they would enjoy the story, especially if they have read the book which would give them some insights also to the story line, but if they haven’t read it the story is easy to follow through their trials & escapades that bring them to the answers. We enjoyed watching this DVD after school one day, popcorn in hand. I think this is probably why it received a PG rating along with some touching, but not deep “life topics.” Sammie also enjoyed the science museum scene, along with the rides around town as some of her favorite scenes & as I mentioned the ending which we can’t share. The movie is not fast paced, no huge action scenes, tricks to catch your attention…but the story flows nicely along with humor both fitting for the young & adults. ![]() ![]() On his return, Witkiewicz, a citizen of the Russian Empire, went to St Petersburg and was commissioned an officer in the Imperial army.
