![]() ![]() Despite the too-convenient ending, this first novel introduces an admirable heroine and pungently evokes a largely unfamiliar setting. Birdy's journal, begun as an assignment, first wells up in the reluctant and aggressive prose of hated homework, and then eases into the lighthearted flow of descriptive adventures and true confessions the narrative device reveals Birdy's passage from rebellious child to responsible adult. ![]() Just as she resigns herself to her fate with the comforting knowledge that ``I am who I am wherever I am,'' word comes that she will not have to marry the oaf after all. ![]() Escaping regularly into a fantasy life of daring escapades and righteous battles, Birdy manages to postpone the inevitable sale of herself as a wife to a very unwelcome suitor. While this portrayal of life for common English people in the late 1200s is pretty accurate, much of the language and other content could have been left out. ``You can run, but you can't hide'' is the rather belated conclusion reached by Catherine, called ``Birdy'' for her caged pets, in this fictive diary of a medieval young woman's coming-of-age and struggle for self-determination. ![]()

![]() ![]() By the time I was in high school, I had pretty much read all of the John Grisham novels published thus far, as well as the Kinsey Millhone series and most of Dick Francis’s stuff. ![]() Mom has pretty much the entire Sidney Sheldon… collection, for lack of a better phrase? He didn’t really write series – his books are like, stand-alone soap opera-esque epics that cover a woman’s life and the crazy antics she and her lovers get into, and also sometimes murder. So instead of the library, I went to my mom’s house and borrowed a couple of her Sidney Sheldon books. Fool me once, shame on you, and all that. But I also wanted a known quantity – I really didn’t feel like taking a chance on an author I’d never read before. But when I was ready to read something again, I was still in the mood for schmaltz. After Up Close And Dangerous left such a ragey flavor in my mouth, I didn’t read anything for like, a week. ![]() ![]() ![]() When I started writing Every Day, there were two questions I wanted to answer – first, what would it be like to be a person who grew up without gender, race, sexual orientation, parents, friends, and all of the other things we usually classify ourselves by, and, second, what would it be like to be in love with someone who changed every day – would it be possible? I wrote the book to figure out what my answers were. ![]() When A falls for Rhiannon, it suddenly changes the stakes of A’s story – and A’s life. ![]() Here's how Levithan describes the book:Īt the start of the story, A is sixteen, and wakes up in the body of Justin, who’s never really treated his girlfriend, Rhiannon, that well. The book is a work of fiction and tells the story of a character named A who awakens each morning in the body of a different person. My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness is embarrassingly relatable. Still, it’s a great book, and worth reading, though it might be more triggering than therapeutic for some people (If you’re looking for something more therapeutic, I’d suggest You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero. It can be a little jarring for the reader to have everything thrown at them at once. Nagata Kabi doesn’t hold back anything in this book. The comic is monochrome with pink accents that highlight the intimacy of the narrative while appealing to the reader’s sense of cuteness. ![]() The graphic novel starts with this scene, then goes back and fills in all the events leading up to it, and ends a little bit past that scene with some insights and take-aways that the protagonist learned from her experience. Driven to the end of her wits, the protagonist decides to call a female prostitute. My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness is a graphic novel memoir about a woman in her late 20s whose life is stymied by clinical depression, sexual repression, and her parents’ and society’s expectations. We quickly realise, then, that this highly coherent and lively book is an indictment of Destouches, who carefully constructed his own overly flattering legend. As its title suggests, it is deliberately selective in its subject matter, focusing on a basic premise: although the pages devoted to the war in Journey to the End of the Night have been pivotal to his establishment as a leading novelist, the experience that Louis Destouches really had in 1914 was not equal to his reputation as a patriotic, heroic fighter, and indeed quickly and deliberately became part of his self-assertion strategy.Ībove all, the references to his glorious past as a war veteran enabled him to ensure the best possible dissemination of the nauseating ideas contained in his pamphlets between 19, before being presented in defence of the outcast during the purge. ![]() Odile Roynette’s remarkably well-researched book is not, strictly speaking, a new biography of Céline or even a biography of a writer.
